Different large-scale studies highlight the potential of legalizing both medicinal and recreational cannabis to improve quality of life. There is a significant reduction in prescription drug use in the general population.

Using Medicaid data between 2011 and 2019, researchers at Ithaca University’s Brooks School of Public Policy found that there has been a considerable reduction in some pain management drugs in that population.

“The potential substitution of cannabis for prescription drugs has attracted a substantial amount of attention within the context of medical cannabis laws (…). However, much less is known about the association between recreational cannabis laws (…) and the use of prescription drugs,” the researchers note.

Those kinds of drugs that are beginning to be replaced represent a large group from pain, anxiety, psychosis, sleep, seizures, and depression.

“Our results suggest prescription drug substitution and potential cost savings for state Medicaid programs,” the study concludes.
