The legalization of cannabis in Canada did not influence the risk of psychosis and schizophrenia

Although cases doubled between 2015 and 2019, legalization was not determined to influence that increase.

According to presentations from the Canadian Emergency Department, between April 2015 and December 2019, cases of psychosis and schizophrenia doubled. However; it could not be determined that this increase was due to the “Cannabis Act” implemented on October 17, 2018.

“We used seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models to assess associations between cannabis legalization in Canada and weekly emergency department visit counts; however, there was no evidence of significant effects of staggered function associated with cannabis legalization on weekly emergency department post-legalization counts” the study reported.

Given the potentially idiosyncratic rollout of cannabis legalization in Canada, more research will be required to establish whether the study results generalize to other settings; the research group concluded.
