Costa Rican farmers and cooperative members see a business opportunity in the new hemp industry being generated in the country.

To attract these people to this new industrial activity, the representatives of the Costa Rican Hemp Coalition and its “Vamos Cáñamo” initiative held a Congress on June 30 and July 1 at the Center for Cooperative Studies and Training (CENECOOP).

The event attracted different sectors interested both in knowing more about the legal hemp products already available in the country, but also, to get advice on productive opportunities, technical information and learn more about this new world.

“We want to know well how it’s going to work and what the potential production markets are for hemp. We do not want the same situation of the past to happen to farmers where there are products that do not have a market,” said Mario Bello, one of the managers of the activity.

The event also had the pleasant participation of Zoila Volio, proponent of the law of medicinal cannabis and hemp 21.88 recently approved in the country. According to his statements, his job during this time is to get the law drafted.

“I dreamed of seeing this as a reality for our country. And my dream now is to go visit each of the future producers,” he said in his speech.

The work of Vamos Cáñamo and the Costa Rican Coalition on Hemp seeks to integrate the groups, but also to train them in this process.

To do this, they have had different international experts who seek to guide them in the knowledge of the market and the products that could be successful.

“I suggest you sell your country’s brand. Don’t focus on making products that don’t have a market. The most sought-after product right now is the hemp flower. But not only the flower for the flower, but where it comes from, how it is grown. That’s the differentiating agent,” said Ronald Coquis.

Another of the organizers, Silvio Bonomelli, was pleased with the work.

“In this we are a team that’s how I see it. We all need more information and capacity to work,” Silvio said.
