The companies Zegreenlab and Ingenio Taboga announced this week the officialization of their first joint cultivation of several hemp seeds in Guanacaste soil.

This alliance created by both companies seeks to generate jobs and diversify the agricultural offer of the area taking advantage of the legality of this crop in Costa Rica since the approval of the Law of Cannabis for Medicinal and Therapeutic Use and Hemp for Food and Industrial use in March 2022.

These are different varieties that in a final objective will be used to obtain fiber and raw materials for various uses.

Once the law was approved, both companies became the first to receive authorization to start their cultivation at the Taboga Sugar Mill. On November 8 of the previous year, they obtained state authorization for the import of reproductive material, cultivation, and economic activities around hemp.

After a process of importation and registration of seeds before the corresponding government entities, the specialists began the process to finally begin today with the tropicalization of seeds and their adaptation for various activities.

“We are starting the process; however, it is a great motivation after more than 10 years of work to be able to carry out this activity legally and start exploring the place that Costa Rica will have in this world market,” said Emmanuel Javogue, president of Zegreenlab, a pioneer in the field of hemp in the country.

“We share with you such a special day, in which the development of hemp in Guanacaste begins, and with it, more employment for our area, always hand in hand with our independent producers, communities, and above all respect for the environment,” Taboga said in a press release.

Both Taboga and Zegreenlab have also ventured into the CBD market nationwide with their brands Virtú and Osmosis made in Costa Rica. Cannabidiol (CBD) is an antioxidant from the hemp plant whose extraction makes it possible to obtain this molecule to be incorporated into different by-products.

These products have an important nutritional and therapeutic capacity that is gaining more and more strength in the country.

Since 2012, he and his team have been legally working on different hemp-related activities. One of its brands “Zegreenlab Construction” has been a pillar in the field of construction with ecological materials such as hemp and bagasse. These types of activities already generate a value-added chain for this industry in Costa Rica.

In 2015, Zegreenlab organized the first Central American Conference on Medicinal Cannabis and Industrial Hemp (CANNACOSTA) whose objective was for the first time to offer free information for the entire public of the country on this issue of the right to health.
